Cows in the clouds

We’re having a fantastic time here in Faial. Today we went on a tour of the island. Our driver took us to the south side of Horta for an amazing view:

Then we went to the top of a dormant volcano where the clouds were rolling in:

And look at Pico from the top of the volcano… So purty:

As we drove to the next spot, we saw a ton of cows and wild mint growing everywhere. The cows were above the clouds! Apparently not much is grown on Faial, just grass for the cows to graze on.

Then we went to a volcano that erupted in 1957 and lasted for 13 months. 1000 people on the island evacuated and all of the crops died. This is the volcano, with us for perspective:

For lunch, we went to Genuino, a restaurant owned by the 10th man in the world to circumnavigate the globe… Solo. While we ate, we read all about him and the route he took. He did it twice – the first time it took him 18 months and the second 21. Maybe that’ll be our next trip?

We ate an amazing octopus stew (couldn’t help ourselves) which was just as amazing as all the other octopus we’ve eaten this trip. We also had fresh cheese and a hot pepper spread.

Taking a lovely siesta in our hotel currently (Enter the Dragon is on TV and we have air conditioning – double score). Will report back after dinner!
